Written by: Elise DeVoe Client:Horse Sports by the Bay, Inc. Release Date:2007-08-03
Traverse City, MI - August 3, 2007 - On the third day of competition at Horse Shows by the Bay III, the R.L. Polk Family Main Hunter Ring welcomed the ASPCA Maclay Horsemanship and Pessoa/USEF Hunter Seat Medal riders. A picturesque day in Traverse City, MI, horses and riders enjoyed the sunshine and cool breeze while Lisa Goldman piloted her bay gelding Ruben to top honors in both equitation classes.
With 15 entries, the Maclay went first. Goldman, of Chicago, IL, has owned her nine-year-old Warmblood, Ruben, since January. "The first three jumps [of the Maclay] felt better than anything I've ever ridden on [Ruben] before, everything flowed really well," said Goldman. Caitlin Maloney rode her Peron to second place while Shannon O'Brien and Calantro came in third.
In the Medal, Goldman was once again victorious with her Ruben. The first round consisted of nine jumps and included a seven or eight-stride bending line and a two-stride off a short rollback turn. Of the fourteen entries, the top four were called back to test. Goldman, Shannon O'Brien, Robert Stucky and Melissa Blades were asked to canter fence one backwards, hand gallop fence two, demonstrate three changes of lead down the centerline, trot fence seven and return to the lineup.
"In the test, I was a worried about the trot jump but we had a little problem with the leads," said Goldman. She explained that she wasn't sure if she should do simple lead changes or flying lead changes down the centerline. "I was going to do a simple change and then a flying lead change like I've seen Brianne Goutal do [in the equitation] but I wasn't sure which one to do simple and which one to do flying so we just came back to a walk on all of them," explained Goldman.
Goldman's test kept her on top and earned her the second blue ribbon of the day. Stucky rode Grand Traverse to second place. O'Brien riding Calantro and Blades aboard Pandora's Box finished in third and fourth places, respectively.
Goldman, who trains with Mary Goldman at Red Coat Farm, also shows a Grand Prix horse, a High Junior Jumper and a five-year-old. She plans to compete in the D-Braider $25,000 Cherry Capital Grand Prix tomorrow afternoon.
Horse Shows by the Bay III continues tomorrow with the Amateur-Owner and Adult Amateur Hunter divisions.
