Mill Spring, NC – October 23, 2026 – It was a bittersweet and memorable day at the 143rd National Horse Show as Sydney Mohrhardt and her family’s beloved 16-year-old Zangersheide gelding, Saint Louis, affectionately known as “Junior,” made their final appearance in the competition ring together.
Part of the Mohrhardt family for six years, Junior originally joined the family as a jumper for Sydney’s older sister, Elliana. When Elliana headed to college in 2024, Sydney took over the reins, quickly developing a special connection with the talented gelding. After initially competing together in the jumper ring, the pair made the transition to equitation, beginning a new chapter that would bring some of their greatest accomplishments.
In 2025, Sydney and Junior’s partnership reached new heights in the equitation ring, qualifying for both the THIS National Children’s Medal Final and the NHS 3’3″ Equitation Championship, sponsored by the Hamel Foundation. The pair rose to the occasion, capturing both prestigious national titles just weeks apart.
Their success continued in 2026 as Sydney entered her first year of Adult Equitation. Once again, Junior proved himself an exceptional partner, helping Sydney finish first nationally in the Ariat Adult Medal points standings and qualify for the NHS Adult Equitation Championship, sponsored by Taylor Harris Insurance Services.
Their final competitive appearance together provided a fitting conclusion to their remarkable journey. Competing in the NHS Adult Equitation 18–21 Championship, sponsored by THIS, Sydney and Junior earned second-place honors in a competitive field of 42 entries.
Beyond the ribbons and championship titles, Sydney shared that Junior’s personality is every bit as memorable as his accomplishments. “He is the goofiest boy, the sweetest horse in the barn,” she said, describing his love for cuddling and his playful habit of chasing other horses during flat classes. While saying goodbye to the competition ring is bittersweet, Sydney looks forward to seeing him enjoy a well-deserved retirement filled with trail rides, green pastures, and time with other horses.
For Sydney, who graduated from high school earlier this year and is spending a gap year working at her barn before attending college, Junior’s influence will extend far beyond the competition ring. Together, they achieved milestones she once only dreamed of.
