Wellington, Fla. – Oct. 30, 2018 – Embark on an epic adventure in Horse & Country TV (H&C TV)’s popular series The Ride, which re-enacts incredible horseback journeys throughout history.
Starring brother-in-laws Barry Armitage and Joe Dawson, the show’s first series, The Ride of the Peacemaker, followed the famous trek of Dick King, originally completed in 1842, across some of South Africa’s most challenging terrain in just 10 days. In its latest series, The Ride: Race Across the Steppe, Armitage and Dawson partake in the renowned Mongol Derby — the world’s toughest horse race based on Genghis Khan’s ancient postal system.
Now, the adventurous pair are setting out on a six-day, 590-mile journey on horseback from Cape Town to Grahamstown, South Africa, in The Ride: Ghost of Harry Smith, which airs on Thursday, Nov. 1, at 7 p.m. EST on H&C TV.
In 1835, Sir Harry Smith chose to ride the route rather than make the voyage by ship due to weather concerns, using the established postal system of that time. At post stations every 25 miles, Smith would change horses, which allowed him to ride at an average speed of over 13 miles per hour.
With 40 horses provided by local trail and endurance riding communities around South Africa, Armitage and Dawson will attempt to replicate the postal system of 1835 and accomplish Smith’s incredible feat in just six days, while scaling high mountain passes, crossing raging rivers and encountering African wildlife.
