Don’t Miss Thursday’s Lunch and Learn at WEF: Keeping the Equine Athlete in Top Shape

Wellington, Fla. – March 14, 2017 – As part of Palm Beach International Equestrian Center’s (PBIEC) weekly series, the ‘Lunch and Learn’ session on Thursday, March 16, will focus on keeping equine athletes in top form with Legend and Ice Horse Cold Therapy. The educational event to be presented by Merial, now part of Boehringer Ingelheim and Ice Horse, will take place at The Wellington Club at PBIEC.

Featured speakers will include Sarah Reuss, VMD, Dipl ACVIM for Boehringer Ingelheim and James A. Orsini, DVM, DIPL. ACVS. Dr. Orsini is an associate professor of surgery at the New Bolton Center, University of Pennsylvania’s School of Veterinary Medicine. He is a board- certified surgeon through the American College of Veterinary Surgeons, and has special expertise in orthopedics, reconstructive surgery and laminitis. Margaret Duprey of Cherry Knoll Farm has been a longtime supporter of the Laminitis initiative and the founder of the first ever Home Care nursing – Equi-Assist – program for horses which Dr. Orsini directed.

Dr. Orsini studies pain management and the pathophysiology of laminitis, prevention and improved treatments. He has previously directed ten national and international meetings on laminitis and diseases of the foot, and has been a guest speaker at several ‘Lunch and Learn’ events in previous years.

“The lecture will discuss and show the link between man and equine athletes, and ways that both can keep themselves at peak performance all the time,” Dr. Orsini explained. “The presentation will include some of the comparative aspects that human and equine athletes share and strategies to stay fit and minimize the wear and tear that occurs in high performance athletes.

“Current medications used in clinical practice for maintaining joints in top form, and the use of cold therapy to reduce inflammation of muscle, tendon and ligament injuries when competing and performing at high levels are part of the lecture,” Dr. Orsini continued.

The ‘Lunch and Learn’ event will take place on March 16 from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m at The Wellington Club at PBIEC.

“We hope to show the connection we share – having similar problems, whether a two-legged or four-legged athlete,” Dr. Orsini said. “Many of the same principles of management are true for both athletes. The ‘Lunch and Learn’ lecture will bring together a great group of people that are interested in getting real-world practical information they can take from the meeting to the barn for their equine athletes and have fun doing it.”

There will be giveaways from the fantastic sponsors, so don’t miss the opportunity to eat and discover in a beautiful setting!
