Wellington, Fla. – Feb. 20, 2017 – Wellington National Golf Club (WNGC) recently hosted its first annual Member/Guest Golf Tournament. The three-day event was held Feb. 9-11 and had a great turnout. All 36 team spots sold out in three days, but only one team walked away with the trophy. Teammates Scott Richards and Bruce Allman earned the victory in an exciting shootout.
The WNGC created the tournament to provide members and their guests with top-notch golf matches and entertainment. Each entry included an invitation to the Stag Party, where each player had the opportunity to meet legendary golf professional, Bob Toski. Following the cocktail reception, players took home a signed, limited edition book written by Toski himself.
Richards, a member of WNGC since October, expressed his excitement to compete alongside his friend, Allman, in the tournament.
“I’ve played with Bruce in the past, and I’ve always enjoyed playing with him. We make a good team,” said Richardson.
Once play began, the pair could not imagine winning the entire tournament. However, they were one of only seven teams remaining on the final day of competition.
“We had both been playing poorly and did not expect to win,” recalled Richards. “There was really no strategy, just to keep the ball in front of us.”
Seven teams faced off in the shootout round, replaying holes 15-18 on the award-winning course.
Surrounded by their fellow competitors, Richards and Allman defeated the other teams with long drives and consistent puts. Once the final two teams reached the 18th green, the sun began setting and the excitement in the crowd arose. Richards sunk the winning putt and was engulfed by cheers from the crowd.
“I think the country club did a great job with this tournament,” Richards said. “I’ve played at a lot of tournaments and this was well organized. The staff made everybody feel welcome, and they got the course in great shape for it. The greens were beautiful and I enjoyed it. Win or lose,” he smiled.
The team at WNGC was thrilled to host the tournament and to witness such great sportsmanship on their course.
“We had an incredible three days of golf, and it was a great experience to meet so many new people,” said Doug Marty, a founding partner of WNGC. “I am looking forward to hosting many more events like this. It’s what makes the club experience so enjoyable.”
The Member/Guest Golf Tournament was just one of several exciting golf events that have taken place at WNGC over the past few months. On January 7 and 8 members of the golf club participated in exclusive Member/Member Tournament. The teams, comprised of two members, competed in much the same way as the Member/Guest Tournament. The flight winners teed off for a shootout match and the team of Doug Marty and Randy Gardner were crowned as the winners of the inaugural event.
Founding member Sandy Hearns also contributed to the winter excitement by being the first member to score a hole in one on December 1, 2016; on Hole 16. Hearn’s accomplishment, as well as tournament winners, are proudly displayed on beautiful wooden plaques outside of the pro shop.
